چکیده

‘Paired’ closely-spaced parallel approaches may enable closely-spaced runways to operate at nearvisual capacity in all weather conditions. This concept requires each trail aircraft in the pair to fly in a ‘safe zone’ in front of the lead aircraft’s wake vortex and in back of the lead aircraft’s potential blunder trajectories. This paper examines the position and length of this safe zone to understand the structure of this operating environment. The results highlight the need for an alerting system, and identify facets of procedures needed for this operation.

Two Studies of Paired Approaches

At airports with closely-spaced parallel runways, the inability to conduct simultaneous approaches in all weather conditions is a cause of significant delay. One concept for reducing delay is paired approaches, where two airc raft on closely spaced approaches are ‘paired’, and the ‘trail’ aircraft stays within a safe zone relative to the ‘lead’. This positioning guarantees that neither aircraft...

Paired Approach: a Closely Spaced Parallel Runway Approach Concept

The paired approach procedure is intended to facilitate IFR approaches to closely spaced parallel runways (closer than 2500 feet) and increase runway throughput where parallel ILS approaches cannot be conducted under instrument meteorological conditions. The paired approach procedure requires that air traffic control pair compatible and eligible aircraft and place them on the final approach cou...

Nasa Research for Instrument Approaches to Closely Spaced Parallel Runways

Within the NASA Aviation Systems Capacity Program, the Terminal Area Productivity (TAP) Project is addressing airport capacity enhancements during instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The Airborne Information for Lateral Spacing (AILS) research within TAP has focused on an airborne centered approach for independent instrument approaches to closely spaced parallel runways using Differenti...

Airborne and Ground Information for Lateral Spacing during Closely Spaced Parallel Approach Operations

The AILS (Airborne Information for Lateral Spacing) system can increase the efficiency of airports in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) by allowing independent, parallel approaches to runways as close as 2,500 feet. The proposed AILS system consists of advanced conflict detection algorithms, flight deck displays, resolution procedures, and a set of airspace procedures to assist with su...

On the Optimum Directivity of Uniformly Spaced Broadside Arrays of Parallel Half-Wave Dipoles (RESEARCH NOTES)

The nominal directivity for uniformly spaced broadside parallel half-wave dipoles associated with a uniform excitation is evaluated. The amplitude distribution for an optimized directivity is then obtained for different numbers of elements with the separations between the dipoles as a variable. The optimum and nominal directivities are compared for different spacings of the elements. While thes...
